JOCKO HOMO MIXTAPE 1- PSYCHE

Hey guys, this is the first in a series of mixtapes for the Jocko Homo blog. The emphasis here isn't necessarily on mixing, but on showcasing some music that might not represented fully at our nights but that we think deserves your attention.

The first in the series is a psychedelic inspired compilation. All of the music here is from the 1960's and most of it takes in all the elements of great Psyche records.. fuzzy guitars, whirling synths and tripped out lyrics..(some of my favourite here include songs about sliding down sun beams, mushrooms that make you Ten feet tall and sliding in and out of buildings..) Most of these records are from the US and UK, but with Psyche taking in more exotic sounds with it's love of Sitars, bells and Eastern melodies; there are records from Pakistan and Brazil represented here also. The mix is 40 minutes long. ENJOY x J.H.

Here's a House mix i put together, I wanted to make something pretty upfront seeing that the rest of the mixes i've posted on here have been such a mish mash of styles. The mix is an hour long going through deep and minimal, taking in elements of future bass.

Enjoy.. x jh

Our Good Friends This is Tmrw present:

Matthew Dear (Live Band)

Matthew Dear released one of the best records of 2010 in ‘Black City’. I think it’s fair to say this album has put him in the same league as the likes of Four Tet and Caribou. Not forgetting his remixes last year, including his re rub of The XX’s – VCR and his live show which has left jaws touching the floor (file under Bowie and LCD Soundsystem)…This show is one of only two solo dates whilst Matthew travels the country supporting Interpol…..We’re so exited to be welcoming him to The Hare and Hounds….This is seriously not a show to be missed..

***** PLEASE NOTE THIS SHOW TAKES PLACE IN VENUE 2 SO CAPACITY IS STRICTLY LIMITED *****

Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for the Fabric mix series and Get Physical’s Body Language. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none—and he’s just hitting his stride.
Matthew Dear’s 2003 full-length Ghostly debut, Leave Luck to Heaven, is a suite of sparse, wickedly funky house laced with Dear’s deep, distinctive vocals, and includes the much-loved single “Dog Days” (voted one of Pitchfork’s Top 100 Songs of the Decade). The record was met with rapturous acclaim from both the dance-music establishment and the critical press, including a four-star review in Rolling Stone. Dear’s 2007 follow-up,
Asa Breed, is a considerable departure from Heaven’s dancefloor excursions, incorporating the polyrhythms of Afrobeat, the irreverent pop sensibilities of Brian Eno, and the austere beauty of Krautrock. More four-stars reviews followed (Q and Mojo magazines), and Dear subsequently began touring with a live three-piece band, Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, in which he acted as frontman, commanding the stage with a Bryan Ferry-like swagger and a gentleman’s grace.
Today, Matthew Dear finds himself in a unique position. His highly anticipated fourth album, 2010’s Black City, is the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation, a darkly playful sound-world that envelops the listener like the arms of a malevolent lover. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarefied corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers, and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.

XMAS MIX

I don't know about anyone else, but if i have an absolute hatred for that bastard Pogues song and although i have a secret soft spot for Slade's festive staple ( IT'S CHRIIISSSSTMMASS!) there's only so many times you can listen to the same 25 standard Christmas records. So (and i realise any credibility we may of once had may now be lost) here's Jocko's Xmas mix! It ranges from 60's Soul, Gospel and reggae, 30's carols and couple of contemporary re-rubs of old classics. It features not 1 but 2 cuts from Phil Spector's 'A Christmas gift for you' THE number one festive album of all time, if you haven't heard it, I'd really recommend it..
